The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in collaboration with Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Justice, the Ombudsperson’s Office, and NGO MADAD, convened a roundtable on March 5, 2025, to evaluate the enforcement of laws criminalizing gender-based violence (GBV) in Uzbekistan. This event underscored the nation’s legislative advancements since the 2023 amendments that criminalized domestic violence, highlighting the pivotal role of civil society in these reforms. UNDP introduced two studies: “Analysis of Judicial Practice on Domestic Violence Offences” and “Analysis of Judicial Practice on Domestic Violence Cases,” offering insights into judicial proceedings and suggesting further legislative enhancements. Participants emphasized the necessity of ongoing collaboration between state entities and civil society to ensure effective implementation of GBV laws and to bolster protections for survivors.
