Turkiye: “Year of the Family” sparks backlash from women’s rights activists

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has declared 2025 the “Year of the Family” to promote traditional gender roles and to encourage Turkish women to have at least three children. However, feminist critics argue that this initiative seeks to impose cultural hegemony, reinforce gender inequalities, and divert attention from Turkey’s economic struggles, with the verbiage of the measure undermining secular family laws and failing to address rising femicide rates. Furthermore, although the government offers financial incentives to support birth rates, experts doubt their long-term effectiveness, citing economic instability and inadequate childcare policies as key deterrents to higher fertility rates.
