The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is phasing out gender-affirming care at its health systems in Phoenix, Tucson, and Prescott, following a federal directive. Veterans already receiving gender-affirming care and those who were receiving this type of care when they were separating from the military will continue to receive services, but no new patients will be accepted.
The VA's decision is part of a nationwide rollback in response to an executive order from President Donald Trump, which mandates the recognition of only two biological sexes. This has alarmed advocates, who warn that cutting access to gender-affirming care, such as hormone therapy, mental health support, and prosthetics, could lead to increased suicide rates among transgender veterans.
Trump’s executive order has also impacted Arizona’s healthcare landscape, with some providers pausing services due to legal uncertainties. Phoenix Children's Hospital indefinitely suspended its hormone therapy services, creating challenges for transgender youth seeking care.
Advocates and medical organizations, including the American Medical Association, argue that gender-affirming care is medically necessary and lifesaving. The policy shift has intensified fears within the transgender community, with critics calling it part of a broader political attack on trans rights.
