Certain traditional and cultural practices in Liberia violate the human rights of women and other vulnerable groups, according to a recent report by the U.N. Mission in Liberiaand the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The report found that these human rights violations, which include “female genital mutilation, forced initiation into secret societies, accusations of witchcraft, trials by ordeal and ritualistic killing,” primarily affect women, children, the elderly, disabled persons and the poor. For example, nearly sixty percent of Liberian women and girls have experienced female genital mutilation (FGM). The report urged Liberia to strengthen formal government institutions to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable and victims receive protection and support.
