According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, executions in Iran reached a total of 901 in 2024, the largest number recorded since 2015. Of those cases, 31 of them were women who had been charged with murder, mostly due to defending themselves or their daughters from domestic violence and forced marriages. Regarding the majority of cases, the most prevalent offense was drug usage, but there were also political dissidents and individuals linked to the 2022 protests, sparked by the murder of Mahsa Amini, amongst the executed as well. In response to all of this, Volker Türk, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, has condemned the executions and urged the Iranian government to halt the trend.
