A bill to ban conversion therapy in Costa Rica has been delayed by conservative opposition in both the legislative and executive bodies. The bill has effectively been ‘frozen’ until February 2025, as a conservative congressman presented 103 motions to halt the plan, in addition to President Chavez presenting criteria against it when it was presented in March 2024. Various political parties in Costa Rica have previously attempted to ban conversion therapy, as it presents a violation to LGBTQI+ rights. However, as of now this bill will remain in limbo, and it is uncertain whether it will be possible to pass it into law next year.
