Canada: Action required for gender based violence
Friday, March 14, 2025 9:10 AM

Rising violence against women and overwhelmed shelters in Canada highlight the urgent need for action. Since October 2024, a rise in domestic violence-related deaths, particularly in Nova Scotia and Alberta, has alarmed authorities. Police officials report an increase in intimate-partner violence, which has prompted calls for awarness- raising campaigns and a national gender-based violence commissioner. This role would ensure accountability and proper implementation of the National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, especially by addressing transparency concerns. Meanwhile, shelters face funding shortages, with thousands of women and children turned away daily due to lack of space. Advocates stress the need for increased funding, prevention programs, and systemic policy changes to protect survivors and prevent future violence.
