In 2024, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, and Canada announced plans to file a complaint against Afghanistan’s Taliban authorities at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for their treatment of women by invoking clauses from the United Nation's Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) to resolve disputes through negotiation, arbitration, and if needed the ICJ. Once the CEDAW Committee completes its review of the complaint, the case could be transferred over to the ICJ, which would give potential for the complaint to become a "groundbreaking" case for the protection of Afghan women’s human rights. Nonetheless, there are many concerns about these international resolution mechanisms as using them could set a precedent for other countries to intervene in another state’s domestic women’s rights issues.
