In 2024, women made modest gains in global political leadership, with only five women elected as Heads of State out of 31 presidential elections. Historic milestones were reached in Mexico, Namibia, and North Macedonia, which elected their first-ever women presidents, and gender-equal cabinets were established in Mexico and the UK. Despite these advances, global women’s parliamentary representation remained stationary at 27%, highlighting ongoing challenges. UN Women called for decisive action, including enforcing gender quotas, addressing societal biases, and combating violence against women in politics, to pave the way for gender-equal leadership and meaningful progress toward equity.
