UN Women has released its 2015-2016 annual report, containing detailed information on the organization’s work in more than 90 countries around the world, including efforts to end violence against women, eradicate human trafficking and empower women economically, socially and politically. The report also calls attention to UN Women’s “central role” in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (“Agenda”), adopted by the UN General Assembly in September 2015, particularly the Agenda’s goal of achieving full equality for women by 2030. UN Women views “substantive” gender equality and “transformative change” as critical to achieving many of the Agenda’s other goals, such as eradicating poverty, ending hunger and creating sustainable communities and cities.
UN Women is now five years old and, according to its annual report, the organization is successfully scaling its impact through partner organizations and country offices around the world. UN Women “will continue to push for swift and effective implementation of the 2030 Agenda, increased investment in gender responsive budgeting, the collection of quality sex-disaggregated data, and stepped-up partnerships with civil society, business communities, the media, academia, men and boys, and youth.”
