According to the World Health Organization (WHO), women and girls across the world are still subjected to the demeaning practice of virginity testing. Research shows there is"‘no scientific validity" to the procedure and that it is "invasive and degrading." A recently published WHO handbook on treating women victims of violence provides recommendations to help end the practice and protect the human rights of women and girls.
