Mali has one of the highest rates of female genital mutilation in the world, at an estimated 91% of women and girls. Research indicates the number of women and girls who are subjected to female genital cutting is increasing, with infant girls being cut more frequently. Deeply rooted cultural tradition in Mali makes it difficult for legislative policies to eliminate the practice.
