United States: Justice Department Issues New Guidance and Creates Pilot Program to Combat Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence

The U.S. Justice Department has announced the release of $2.7 million in grants to improve the prosecution of sexual assault cases and increase assistance to victims. Seven diverse U.S. jurisdictions, including the Cherokee Nation in Oklahoma and the City of Los Angeles, will participate in the new pilot project. According to the Justice Department, the grants are “designed to strengthen the justice system’s response to sexual violence and enhance collaborations among sexual assault victim services providers, law enforcement agencies and sexual assault medical forensic services providers.”

The grants were announced at the release of new Justice Department guidelines, titled “Identifying and Preventing Gender Bias in Law Enforcement Response to Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence.”
