On the 6th of February, UN Women issued a statement on the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM): by which they emphasized that FGM is a cruel form of gender-based violence, and States must take assertive steps to eliminate it. In light of the approaching 30th anniversary of the Beijing Conference on Women, UN Women reflect that while there has been documented progress to criminalize FGM, there is still work that remains to fully eradicate the cultural practice.
