A recent report prepared by the Turkish Ministry of Family and Social Policy found that nearly 40% of women in Turkey are victims of domestic violence. Most of these women (89%) did not report the violence or press criminal charges. The report also found that approximately one in ten married or pregnant women experienced sexual violence. Additionally, women who left or divorced their husbands were more likely than other women to “face violence resulting in murder.” The president of the Federation of Turkish Women's Associations, Canan Güllü, obtained the previously un-published report and delivered it to the Turkish parliament’s Violence Against Women Commission.
