Undertaken with the support of the law firm of Akin Gump, this report details the backlash to human rights, with a spotlight on the Istanbul Convention. The Advocates prepared this report to document the alarming opposition to the Istanbul Convention, formally known as the Council of Europe (CoE) Convention on preventing and combatting violence against women and domestic violence. The report documents how organized opposition has negatively influenced the debate over ratification and undermined women’s human rights. The report’s findings are based on research focusing on Armenia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Turkey, and Ukraine, as well as interviews with stakeholders from these and other countries.
