Scotland: New Human Trafficking Law Enters into Force
The Human Trafficking and Exploitation (Scotland) Act, approved by Scotland’s parliament in October 2015, recently came into force. The act strengthens Scottish criminal law by clarifying the definition of human trafficking and making it a separate criminal offense. Persons convicted of human trafficking face life sentences. The Act is intended to improve the government's response to victims of human trafficking by allowing adult victims to access support services previously available only to children.
Justice Secretary Michael Matheson stated, “Legislation alone will not stop trafficking, which is why we are developing a human trafficking and exploitation strategy to build on the work already being undertaken to increase public awareness and help businesses and staff spot the signs of potential trafficking and exploitation."
