EU: Rights Groups Urge EU to Uphold Territorial Asylum, Criticizing Outsourcing Practices

More than 95 organizations urged the EU and its Member States to uphold the right to territorial asylum in Europe, criticizing efforts to outsource asylum processing to non-EU countries, citing the Italy-Albania agreement as an example. Organizations assert these practices violate the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, which both prohibit transferring asylum seekers outside the EU. The groups highlighted that externalizing asylum processing may lead to rights violations and prolonged detention in countries unable to fairly handle claims. The groups also called on the European Commission to reject these proposals and focus on lawful, humane, and sustainable asylum policies within the EU.
