The 2006 International Women’s Day was celebrated under the UN theme “Women in Decision Making” throughout the world.
Within the framework of this Theme, the National Network of the Mongolian Women’s NGOs organized, in collaboration with UNIFEM, the National Conference “Through the Eyes of and with Joint Efforts of Women."
The Conference was held on 8 March 2006 in Ulaanbaatar.
Objective of the Conference:
- To attract the attention of the Government and the public to the pressing issues facing the Mongolian society;
- To assess these issues and look their solutions.
Under the preparation for the Conference, members of the Network divided into 4 working groups and organized sessions by selected themes.
Objective of the Working sessions:
- Politics – How to effectively apply and implement in practice the 30% quota reflected in the election Law; Issues of responsible government, ethics of politics and others.
- Economy- Monitoring activities of civil society organizations aimed at making the process of planning, distribution and expenditure of the budget more transparent;
Gender issues in land relations and the 1% tax proposal;
- Human Rights-Selected issues: sexual harassment at the workplace, trafficking of women and the implementation process of the Law on Domestic Violence;
- Civil society organizations- Emerging issues facing the women’s movement; draft Law on Non-Profit organizations ;
Outcome:
The National conference worked out the Plan of Actions on selected issues for the nationwide campaign to be carried out until the year of 2007. When unified, women’s NGOs and other women’s organizations have the opportunity to lobby and pressure the State and government to solve social problems.
Participants of the Conference: About 350 delegates attended the national conference, including 2-3 delegates from each Aimag (Province) and districts of Ulaanbaatar, representatives of Government, UN agencies, donor organizations, national NGOs and private sectors.
