Most media coverage of sexual violence focuses on the criminal justice elements of rape investigations and prosecutions, according to a new study published by the Berkley Media Studies Group and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. The study, called “What’s missing from the news on sexual violence? An analysis of coverage, 2011-2013," reviewed news articles over the course of several years to identify trends in sexual violence coverage. The researchers found that few articles discussed or analyzed methods of preventing sexual violence against women. The study recommended that reporters broaden the scope of their reporting on sexual violence to convey opportunities to end sexual violence.
