Mexico: Decriminalizing abortion – A step forward for reproductive rights
Thursday, December 26, 2024 3:25 AM

On November 25, 2024, Mexico’s Congress voted to decriminalize abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy, aligning with 18 other Mexican states following a 2021 Supreme Court ruling. This reform removes criminal penalties, improving access to abortion services and reducing fear of legal consequences for patients and healthcare providers. However, abortion remains criminalized after the first trimester with specific exceptions. Advocates stress the need for broader reforms, addressing barriers and biases in reproductive healthcare to ensure equitable access.
