Despite the persistence of patriarchal values and conservative traditions within the public space, progress in women’s rights areas is emerging in Libya, particularly in more wealthy areas. For example, despite the enforcement of various morality laws, emerging conservative forces, and limited representation in the parliament, Libyan women have been increasingly involved in political participation programs. Furthermore, in the November elections, Za’ira al-Maqtouf was elected to become the country’s first female mayor, which marks a significant milestone for women’s leadership in public life and gives hope to others hoping to follow in her footsteps.
