Latin American NGOs: Compliance Necessary with Sexual and Reproductive Rights
Tuesday, January 28, 2025 11:35 AM

In a joint statement, various Latin American and the Caribbean non-governmental organizations (NGO) called upon the international community to ensure compliance with international obligations towards sexual and reproductive rights as enshrined in international human rights law. Among their main concerns, they cite the need to: decriminalize abortion, ensure quality sexual education, offer sexual healthcare services, punish and prevent instances of gynecological and obstetric violence, and to bring about change that targets institutional gender-based discrimination. The NGOs call for states to comply with international rulings, citing the recent cases by the Committe for the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the InterAmerican Court of Human Rights (IACtHR). The joint letter pleads that states abide by their international obligations, citing the need for swift action to protect reproductive rights.
