Kenya has outlawed the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM). Not only are the practice and procurement of FGM illegal in the country as well as taking citizens abroad for the procedure, the law also criminalizes derogatory comments about women who have not had FGM.
Kenya follows the example of many other African countries which have banned FGM. However, in nine African countries, 85 percent of women still undergo FGM, including in some countries where the practice is banned.
