Iraq: Controversial family law is halted by Iraq’s top court

Following lawmakers’ illegality complaints regarding the voting process, Iraq’s top court has suspended three recent bills passed by the government. One of these includes legislation that would have amended Iraq’s personal status law to give courts more control over family issues like divorce, marriage, and inheritance, with activists arguing that it would have hurt women’s rights and catalyzed child marriage. The other two suspended bills include an amnesty law that could free corrupt officials and war criminal militants and a measure that would have returned lands confiscated by Saddam Hussein to Kurds, which faces opposition from Arab groups fearing displacement.
