Iran: Global action needed for recognition and accountability of gender apartheid
Monday, April 21, 2025 4:30 PM

Iranian women continue to face systemic oppression due to discriminatory laws and policies that restrict their rights in various areas such as marriage, work, and personal freedoms. This institutionalized subjugation has escalated over decades, forming a regime of gender apartheid that meets the criteria for a crime against humanity according to The Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI). Thus, the CHRI has urged the global community to codify gender apartheid under international law, advocate for its criminalization, and apply diplomatic pressure on Iran to end its oppressive practices—as such international recognition would strengthen legal mechanisms and hold perpetrators accountable, much like the global efforts that led to the dismantling of apartheid in South Africa.
