International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families

The International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (ICRMW) entered into force on 1 July 2003. The Convention guarantees rights to migrant workers without distinction based on several protected grounds, including sex. Among other protections, the ICRMW prohibits slavery, servitude, and forced or compulsory labor and guarantees the right to liberty and security of person. The Committee on Migrant Workers, tasked with interpreting the ICRMW, monitors States Parties' compliance with the convention. The individual complaint mechanism for the ICRMW has note yet entered into force. States Parties are obligated, however, to report on their progress toward the obligations set out in the convention periodically. To date, 55 countries have ratified the ICRMW and 13 have signed it.
