In seven states in India, the government has created a program to work against discrimination against girls. Although aborting known female fetuses is an illegal practice, a study in The Lancet, a British medical journal, found that ten million female fetuses have been aborted in the last twenty years. Poor families who keep their girl children will receive $385 in phases, in addition to $2481 if the girl, until the age of 18, is properly educated, unmarried, and given adequate nutrition and immunizations.
