European Union: Parliament Votes to Make Abortion a Fundamental Right

The European Parliament voted on April 11 to amend the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights to include "Everyone has the right to bodily autonomy, to free, informed, full and univeral access to SRHR (sexual and reproductive health care), and to all related healthcare services without discrimination, including access to safe and legal abortion."  The vote culminuated with 336 members for, 163 against, and 39 abstentions on the amendment. The approved rights would include age-appropriate sexuality and relationship education.  The vote also called for the European Union to stop funding anti-choice groups, and for Poland and Malta in particular to annul laws banning or restricting abortion.
