Ethiopia: Scores of Women and Girls Sexually Assaulted in Tigray Region Even After Peace Deal

A study by Physicians for Human Rights and the Organization for Justice and Accountability in the Horn of Africa indicates that scores of women and girls have been sexually assaulted in the northern Tigray region, often by multiple men alleged to be combatants, after a peace agreement in 2022 that offficially ended the conflict there.  The study comes from health records as recent as June 2023, and reports that many women and girls have gone for months without treatment, and many of them now have HIV infections, incontinence and chronic pain, and some are raising children that resulted from rape.  The report calls for care and accountability, including from the United Nations and others.  Even authors of the report are fearful of retaliation from Ethiopian authorities.
