In a recent ruling, the Constitutional Court of Ecuador found that a private school discriminated against a trans girl during her transition process. When the girl's parents asked the school to accomodate their daughter's transition, the school proceeded to refuse her access to the girl's bathroom, did not allow her to wear the girl's uniform, and required the parents to produce a diagnosis of "transsexuality." Even when the Department of Education required the school to accomodate their student's gender, the school refused. Following negative responses from lower courts, the parents turned to the Constitutional Court - who found that the school had indeed violated their daughter's human rights, mainly her rights to an education and to be free from discrimination. This case follows Ecuador's general struggle to fully implement the InterAmerican Court of Human Rights (IACtHRs) rulings on gender-identity, but this decisions shows a positive step forward in protecting trans youth.
