In Kyrgyzstan, as noted by the Vice Prime Minister Aida Ismailova, domestic violence rose by 65% during the first quarter of 2020, in part, due to COVID-19 lockdown measures. In the capital city of Bishkek, domestic violence cases increased by more than 60% compared to the same period in 2019. The Spotlight Initiative in Kyrgyzstan has been working with the United Nations as well as with the national Kyrgz government to protect Kyrgz women from violence during the pandemic – establishing temporary safe spaces for women, online psychosocial services, and a national service that connects domestic abuse helplines with crisis centers. In early June a video of a man abusing his wife went viral in Kyrgyzstan and sparked national outrage. Civil society is now demanding that all domestic violence perpetrators be prosecuted under the Criminal Code to ensure that they are held accountable for their actions.
