Recently in Israel, there has been a 20% uptick in domestic violence. The Welfare and Social Services Ministry published figures in late May showing its hotline receiving a 112 percent increase in domestic violence complaints from April to May. In late March, shelters for victims of domestic violence were at around 95% capacity, forcing the Welfare Ministry to assure the creation of new centers. In early May and into early June protestors have congregated in cities across Israel to demonstrate against the increase of domestic violence incidences and femicides that have occurred during the confinement period. In response to the increased reports of domestic violence, the Israeli government’s Welfare Ministry, in cooperation with a social organization known as Alone, started a rehabilitation program for female domestic violence victims called “new threat.”
