Brazil: Recorded Rise in Violence against Women
Tuesday, February 4, 2025 9:50 AM

At the end of 2024, São Paulo recorded 14,689 cases of rape and 250 cases of femicide - the highest levels since the city started documenting incidences of violence against women. In contrast, the city reported a decline in levels of overall homicide cases in 2024, and experts indicate that the already high levels of violence against women might be lower than reality because of underreproting. In light of these worrying figures, the Brazilian government has delineated strategies to address this issue: mainly, increasing services for victims and creating a reporting app. In all, this contrast between general crime and violence against women reflects the need to take an intersectional approach to crime, as means to obtain safety for all.
