Afghanistan: Taliban escalates restrictions on women in NGOs, education, and daily life

Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers have intensified their restrictions on women, ordering the closure of all NGOs employing women and enforcing a ban on post-primary education for girls. Adding to these measures, Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada has prohibited windows overlooking spaces where women might be visible, claiming it aligns with Islamic principles. These policies severely limit women’s participation in public life and impede the delivery of critical humanitarian aid, as female staff are essential for reaching women and children in conservative communities.
