On March 13, 2008, the Uzbek Parliament voted to adopt an anti-trafficking law. The law will focus on creating a viable legal framework to prevent and punish the trafficking of persons. According to the Jahon News Agency, the law reflects state efforts to "fight the illegal exploitation, migration, and trade of human beings." The Uzbek Parliament had stated in its own press release that over 1000 cases of human trafficking had been reported to law enforcement in the three years, leading to the initiation of 700 criminal investigations.
