Strengthening the Protection of Women from Torture

In honor of International Women’s Day, the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) joined the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture to broaden the framework for characterizing and responding to women torture victims. Women of all classes and ages may be subject to torture, particularly in armed conflict situations. Additionally, violence against women can be understood and should be classified as “torture.” This will result in enhanced obligations and legal implications for these crimes. The IRCT also urges reparation and rehabilitation programs to be gender-inclusive. Programs should focus on reducing the stigma and re-traumatization that often occurs when female victims of torture and rape seek medical and other services. IRCT also calls for specific treatment and research for female victims at facilities and universities. Part of the commitment to eradicate torture must include an acknowledgment and criminalization of violence against women.
