The book "Grace, Tenacity, and Eloquence: The Struggle for Women's Rights in Africa," affirms the common perception that women in Africa face deep challenges. Some of these challenges include: being the main victims of violence in conflicts, death due to pregnancy and childbirth, being three times more likely to contract HIV/AIDS than men, and enduring female genital mutilation in rates higher than anywhere else in the world.
African leaders created a comprehensive legal framework to address these issues: The Protocol on the Rights of Women in Africa. The protocol, however, was not promptly ratified. This prompted the Solidarity for African Women’s Rights to organize a campaign that led to the passage of the protocol.
The book "gathers together articles about that campaign which have appeared in the prize-winning weekly electronic newsletter, Pambazuka News, published by Fahamu,"(cited in: Grace, Tenacity, and Eloquence: The Struggle for Women’s Rights in Africa) with the intent "to provide students, activists and others with an easy to read introduction to the struggle for women’s rights in Africa."
