Round Table on May 8 in Baku on Domestic Violence
The head of the Legislation Sector on Human Rights in Milli Majlis (Parliament), Emil Taghiyev, a lawyer from State Committee on Family, Women and Children’s Affairs, Elgun Safarov, colleagues from the Ombudsman's office, and representatives from civil society organizations working on domestic violence and gender and women’s rights issues participated in a round table held on 8 May 2009 in Baku, Azerbaijan. During the round table participants shared their work on domestic violence and had the opportunity to ask questions of the representative of Milli Majlis working on domestic violence. A Commentary on the Draft Law on Domestic Violence by The Advocates for Human Rights was translated by the Public Union for Gender Equality and Women's Initiatives (www.gewi-az.org) into Azerbaijani and distributed among the participants. After the round table, the Azerbaijani version of the Commentary was sent to Milli Majlis and the State Committee on Family, Women and Children’s Issues. Milli Majlis plans to send the Commentary to the appropriate entity working on improvement of the draft law.
