New Amendment to Police Forces Act
Thursday, January 08, 2009 2:08 PM

As of 15 December 15 2008, the competences of the police are extended under the new amendment to the Act on Police Forces.

In the field of domestic violence, the amendment gives the police the right to expel the person perpetrating domestic violence from their home for 48 hours. This aim of this provision is to fight domestic violence more effectively and prevent further violence. The police have to file a report in such cases, provide information on support services and the possibility to obtain a court order to the victim. In case the life or health of children is in danger due to violence, the police file a report also with the social affairs and family offices.

The amendment also reflects the framework decision of the Council of Europe on exchange of information among law enforcement agencies in the EU member states in criminal proceedings. It specifies the conditions under which information on and personal data of Slovak citizens can be provided to other EU member states for the purposes of police criminal investigation.
