Nepali Women Trafficked, Then Forced to Sell Their Kidneys

Gang members have been arrested for taking Nepali women to the Indian city of Kolkata, forcing them to sell their kidneys, and then selling the women to brothels. Due to the open border between India and Nepal, one of the poorest countries in the world, both trafficking in Nepali women and children and the sale of kidneys by impoverished Nepali people are common in

India

. Nepali police and Maiti Nepal, an NGO working against trafficking in women and children, uncovered this particular scheme, which involved gang members gaining control over some of their eventual victims by marrying them, and luring women to India with the promise of highly paid jobs.
