Fenestra to Analyze the Implementation of VAW Legislation by Law Enforcement Agencies in Slovakia

In its upcoming project funded by Block Grant for NGOs under EEA and Norway Grants, Fenestra will analyze the impact of the police, prosecutors and court decisions in intimate partner violence against women cases in terms of safety of women experiencing violence.

Our aim is to identify factors having impact on safety of women during the police and court proceedings, seek possible solutions in order to increase women’s safety and draft recommendations for the relevant law enforcement agencies, as well as to inform the Slovak government, the individual ministries and other relevant actors on both national and local levels about the outcomes.

The Slovak Republic has ratified most of the major international human rights treaties granting the right to life and security of person to all people. Safety of women should be therefore a key priority of the current legislation implementation. This objective should also be reflected in all procedures of law enforcement agencies. However, the experience of women’s NGOs shows the implementation of the relevant provisions does not always mean more safety for women.

Currently, there is no analysis of the impact of implementation of relevant legislation on safety of women. However, such analysis is a crucial precondition of identifying the factors negatively affecting women’s safety and then seeking ways of positive changes in this field.
