Bulgaria Is in Leading Position in Human Trafficking 8/28/2008 9:06 AMDuring a press conference organized by the “European Youth Programs” National Centre in Plovdiv, it became clear that Bulgaria has the biggest number of children and youths who have become victims of trafficking. The trafficked people are mainly poor or of Roma origin.
A program called “Youth in Action” was promoted at the forum. Part of this program is aimed at the prevention of trafficking in young people.
In its current stage, the program does not focus on the victims of trafficking but rather on the awareness of young people, who will train their contemporaries and younger children. The Bulgarian Network for Prevention of Trafficking in Children and Youths announced that it begins work with students who are in the first grade.
The funds allotted by the European Commission for Bulgaria are over 48,000 Euro. The seminar will end on Saturday and until then, it will have photo essays, a Day of the modern youth’s subcultures and a carnival in the centre of Plovdiv.
