Afghanistan: Violence Against Women Primary Database 5/13/2008 9:36 AMCombining anecdotal evidence from various regions of Afghanistan, the report examines evidence from the Violence Against Women (VAW) primary database and UNAMA statistics and analysis. The data confirms the fact that most violence against women in Afghanistan is perpetrated by close family members, including life-term partners, in-laws, and fathers and brothers.
An analysis of the data also highlights the problem of forced marriages and early engagements, which in addition to being a violation itself, also tends to increase the rate of violence against women. However, numerous problems of access and punishment for reporting indicate a need for better referral services for the women of Afghanistan.
