Combining anecdotal evidence from various regions of Afghanistan, the report examines evidence from the Violence Against Women (VAW) primary database and UNAMA statistics and analysis. The data confirms the fact that most violence against women in Afghanistan is perpetrated by close family members, including life-term partners, in-laws, fathers, and brothers.
An analysis of the data also highlights the problem of forced marriages and early engagements, which are not only against the law in Afghanistan but also, some believe, directly connected to a rise in domestic violence. In addition, numerous problems of access and punishment for reporting indicate a need for better referral services for the women of Afghanistan.
