The European Women's Lobby (EWL) is calling on the European to develop a proposal for a legal framework to address violence against women. The EWL hopes that an EU wide binding Directive addressing all forms of violence against women will be drafted and implemented as soon as possible. The EWL is also calling for 2006 to be designated as the European Year of Action to Combat Violence against Women in order to increase Member States' commitment to ending violence against women, and to raise awareness of the issue.
