CAT releases Concluding Observations with regard to the Third Periodic Report of the Czech Republic

The 32nd session of the Committee Against Torture released its Concluding Observations in respect to reports presented by States party to the Committee on May 28, 2004. In response to the Third Periodic Report of the Czech Republic which covers the period from 1 January 1998 to 31 December 2001, the report raises subjects of concern regarding allegations of uniformed and involuntary sterilization of Roma women. The Committee recommends that the claims be investigated by employing medical and personnel records and through urging the complainants to assist in substantiating the allegations.

The Czech Republic succeeded to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment on 1 January 1993 with a declaration on Article 22 and 22, reservations on Article 20 and reservations on Article 30.
